{"id":28,"date":"2021-09-09T04:18:54","date_gmt":"2021-09-09T04:18:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hearthealth.peezy.org\/?p=28"},"modified":"2021-09-16T09:17:12","modified_gmt":"2021-09-16T09:17:12","slug":"cholesterol-101","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nichedemosites.com\/Heart_Health\/cholesterol-101\/","title":{"rendered":"Cholesterol 101"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Cholesterol is something that people have learned to fear.&nbsp; We spend a lot of time eating foods that don\u2019t have much of it and we get our blood tested for it, but what is this strangesubstance that\u2019s responsible for damaging our hearts?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&nbsp;Cholesterol is material that\u2019s waxy and fatty.&nbsp; It\u2019s found in the blood and in all of the cells of the body.&nbsp; In fact, cholesterol can be a good thing \u2013 you\u2019re supposed to have some.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&nbsp;Your body actually puts it to good use when it\u2019s making cell membranes and putting together the building blocks of hormones.&nbsp; So why do we worry so much about having it if we need it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u00a0Too much cholesterol in the body results in hypercholesterolemia.\u00a0 This is the technical term for high cholesterol.\u00a0 When your body has more cholesterol than it can use for its everyday processes, the rest of it ends up floating freely in the blood.\u00a0 When this happens, it begins to become deposited on the blood vessel walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/nichedemosites.com\/Heart_Health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/cholesterol-101.webp\" alt=\"Cholesterol 101\" class=\"wp-image-123\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nichedemosites.com\/Heart_Health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/cholesterol-101.webp 800w, https:\/\/nichedemosites.com\/Heart_Health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/cholesterol-101-300x188.webp 300w, https:\/\/nichedemosites.com\/Heart_Health\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/cholesterol-101-768x480.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&nbsp;Where does all this cholesterol come from?&nbsp; Interestingly enough, your body actually produces about \u00be of the cholesterol in your blood.&nbsp; The remaining \u00bc of your blood cholesterol comes from the foods you eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&nbsp;People often have high cholesterol because genetically they\u2019re designed to produce more, regardless of what they eat.&nbsp; Sometimes people have high cholesterol mainly due to eating too much of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&nbsp;All cholesterol is not created equal.&nbsp; The bad kind of cholesterol is LDL (low density lipoprotein) and triglyceride (which comes from fatty foods).&nbsp; The good kind of cholesterol is HDL (high density lipoprotein).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&nbsp;LDL is the kind of cholesterol that gets deposited on your blood vessel walls and HDL actually goes and picks up the bad cholesterol to help keep it away from your blood vessel walls.&nbsp; Naturally, you want your LDL levels to be low and your HDL levels to be high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&nbsp;Many people can manage high cholesterol levels by improving their diet.&nbsp; That consists of eating a low amount of saturated fat and a high amount of fiber.&nbsp; Physical activity is also one way to raise your HDL levels.&nbsp; However, sometimes genetics overrides your lifestyle and medication is required to lower your blood cholesterol levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&nbsp;It\u2019s important that you get a yearly checkup and have your blood cholesterol levels measured.
